SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT
Renovated college areas are transformed with enhanced lighting – saving energy, improving facility operation, and providing a more comfortable environment for staff and students.
San Diego Community College District, the second largest district in California, recognized an opportunity to save energy, upgrade equipment, and optimize buildings with the passing of Proposition 39. Prop 39, California’s Clean Energy Jobs Act, provides funding for eligible energy efficiency education projects. With many of San Diego Community College District’s older facilities still using energy-consuming fluorescent fixtures and high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, the District quickly identified lighting as a high return, low risk project.
Since 2014, Enovity has implemented interior and exterior lighting retrofits at seven District campuses. We transferred lessons learned from our experience in design/build delivery of energy efficient systems to deliver a cost-effective and tailored approach. When bid documents were found to be non-representative of existing conditions at the campuses, we worked closely with the District to appropriately move scope and identified alternative lamps that provided substantially greater energy savings. To minimize disruption, our team coordinated interior building work around students schedules and worked evenings and weekends to prevent disturbance to staff.
To date, Enovity has installed more than 3,300 state-of-the-art LED fixtures and wireless lighting controls – all within the District’s original timeframe and with no cost overruns. The new lighting has reduced the District’s energy consumption and resulted in reduced maintenance costs, optimized buildings that are easier for staff to operate and maintain, and has enhanced the safety and campus environment.
