SAN MATEO COUNTY STRATEGIC ENERGY PLAN

COUNTY OF SAN MATEO

After implementing a continuous energy improvement program, the County is on track to cut energy use in its facilities 31% by 2020.

In 2011, the County of San Mateo set out to accomplish an ambitious goal: reduce non-renewable energy consumption in County facilities by 25% before the year 2020. The County’s commitment to build a prosperous and healthy community was the first step in their journey to a more energy-efficient future. For the rest of the roadmap, the County turned to Enovity.

To achieve energy efficiency reductions on this scale and maintain them over such a period of time, the County needed more than a one-time planning exercise. Enovity helped the County implement continuous energy improvement, a model for long-term success that elevates energy management to the highest levels of an organization. This program included:

  • Benchmarking energy use intensity across the County’s portfolio
  • Investigating efficiency, demand response, and self-generation opportunities in the facilities that used the most energy
  • Assessing the County’s energy management organization, engaging stakeholders across departments and identifying barriers to change
  • Evaluating energy management information system options
  • Adopting key performance indicators for tracking progress

The resulting Strategic Energy Master Plan lays out 72 energy investment opportunities in an eight-year project implementation plan. It also put the County on pace to exceed its aggressive goals, achieving a projected 31% reduction in non-renewable energy use by 2020.
