Curtis develops analysis tools that make data useful for the people who own and operate facilities.

With a unique background in both mechanical and software engineering, Curtis applies his expertise in energy efficiency, building automation, and data analysis technologies to help Enovity teams and our customers get to the right answers more quickly.

After studying mechanical engineering at San Francisco State, Curtis went to work in the software industry for 10 years. This gave him the opportunity to learn from experienced programmers and lead small, agile teams through the engineering process. He found a niche coordinating between software engineers and IT professionals, experience that translates well to his work with emerging smart building technologies.

Building automation systems predate the internet, so they often don't play nice with data networks. The operations staff who use the BAS are not accustomed to coordinating with IT professionals, and vice versa. We help translate so that the two teams can reach a common understanding."

Traditionally, energy engineers have had to physically visit facilities and make energy efficiency recommendations based on limited information, because datasets like BAS trends have been so time intensive to collect. Once collected, that data has typically been analyzed by an engineer who uses a spreadsheet calculation tool and a lot of assumptions. With his software background, Curtis knew that there had to be a better way.

By adopting data science techniques from other industries, we're able to automate a lot of the analysis and decision making that otherwise could only be done by a domain expert. We can give owners and operators a real-time view into how their buildings are performing."
